What is salt damp repair?

Salt damp — also called rising damp — happens when ground moisture is drawn upward through your walls by capillary action, carrying dissolved salts with it. Those salts crystallise inside the brickwork, crumbling mortar and pushing plaster and render off the wall from within. The stains, the peeling paint, the white powder at the base of your walls — that's salt damp.

Here's what most homeowners don't realise: the render isn't the problem. The render failed because the wall behind it is wet. Patching the surface without stopping the moisture is the single most common mistake — and the reason most salt damp repairs don't last.

Buildfix salt damp repair starts where it should: at the source. DampBlock™ AQ50 creates a new damp-proof course (DPC) inside the wall first. Then the damaged render is stripped, a salt-retardant base coat applied, and the walls finished with a breathable render. One team, one visit, one result that lasts.

Why does render fail on salt damp walls?

Rising damp carries dissolved salts from the ground into the masonry. As the moisture evaporates, those salts crystallise behind the render — expanding and pushing it off the wall from within. Standard cement render traps the moisture and accelerates the damage. Breathable render lets the wall dry while the new DPC stops fresh moisture from entering.

Salt damp repair replaces the failed render with a system designed for damp-affected walls — but only after the moisture source is cut off. The result: walls that stay smooth, stay dry, and don't peel again.

Our salt damp repair solution — DampBlock™

Non-Invasive. Permanent. Guaranteed.

Breathable Finish. No Recurring Damage. Done in a Day.

Every salt damp repair that lasts starts with the same step: cutting off the moisture. DampBlock™ resin is injected into the centre of each brick through small holes drilled at close intervals along the base of each affected wall. The resin spreads through the masonry and cures to form a permanent damp-proof course inside the wall itself.

Once the DPC is in place, salt-damaged plaster and render are stripped back to solid substrate. A SaltBlock™ salt-retardant base coat locks in residual salts, then the walls are finished with a breathable render that allows remaining moisture to escape while the new DPC takes full effect.

The result: walls that dry naturally, stay smooth, and don't peel again. That's what salt damp repair looks like when the cause is treated first. Not a band-aid. A permanent fix.

Not sure if your render is failing because of salt damp? That's what the free assessment is for.

Buildfix technician injecting DampBlock resin into brick wall for salt damp repairStep 3

DampBlock™ Injection

Small holes are drilled at close intervals along the base of each affected wall. DampBlock™ resin is injected into the centre of each brick, spreading through the masonry and curing to form a permanent DPC. The moisture source is cut off before any rendering begins.

Walls stripped and finished with salt-retardant base coat after DampBlock treatmentStep 4

Strip, Seal, and Finish

Salt-damaged render is stripped back to solid masonry. A SaltBlock™ salt-retardant base coat is applied to lock in residual salts, then the walls are finished with a breathable render — smooth, clean, and ready to paint.
