What is rising damp and what causes it?

Rising damp occurs when your home’s porous masonry structure sucks up far too much moisture out of the ground. Stone, mortar and/or brick now holds both water and a variety of potentially destructive salts.

In most cases, rising damp is caused by —

A Corroded Membrane

A corroded membrane

Over decades, the damp proof coursing installed by builder’s during the construction of your home may have corroded. This allows water and salts in where they shouldn’t be.

Lack of Drainage

Drainage-causes

Broken and leaking pipes, unconnected downpipes, leaking roof gutters and nearby overflowing stormwater drains can direct excess water in and around your home’s foundations.

Poor Sub-floor Ventilation

Poor sub-floor ventilation

Poor ventilation can mean there’s no way for the moisture your masonry has absorbed to escape. With nowhere for moisture to go, the symptoms of rising damp will develop more quickly.

Poor workmanship

Workmanship-causes

During construction, damp proof coursing may have been poorly install by the builder or not installed at all. With no barrier to stop rising damp, salts can damage walls from the ground up.

Why you need damp proofing

Rising damp can pose a variety of threats to your home, you and your family. Rising damp can cause —

  • Aesthetic Damage
Paint needs a dry surface to adhere to but damp works against this. As your porous masonry absorbs water out of the ground, the walls become drenched causing paint to flake, blister or powder. Rising damp can also cause yellow or brown tide-like stains.
  • Structural Damage to your Home
When your home’s porous masonry draws water out of the ground, it also traps the salts and minerals in that water the wall. Over time, in varying weather conditions, the salts and minerals can crystallise and disintegrate masonry from the inside out.
  • Mould and Sickness
If moisture is unable to dry or escape from the interior or exterior walls of your home, it eventually turns black or even dark green with mould. This is a hotbed for bacteria which can eventually cause asthma, and allergies.

The different damp proofing solutions available on the market for rising damp

Rising damp can pose a variety of threats to your home, you and your family. Rising damp can cause —

  • Petrochemical Injection DPC
Using petrochemical injections is a popular method amongst damp proof installers. They have great permeable properties but are flammable and release hazardous toxins during the curing process.
  • Physical Plastic DPC
If a physical plastic damp proof coursing is installed during construction, it works well. But when it needs to be installed after a building is completed it requires a large area of wall to be removed. This can be extremely expensive.
  • Manually applied Silicone Cream
This method is popular amongst DIYers as it seems easy to do and is odourless. The problem is that walls need to be extremely damp for it to spread and has little effect on rising damp during drier seasons in Australia. This is better suited to countries with wetter climates.

Our damp proofing methods —

Damp proofing for cavity walls

Rising damp in walls requires a damp proof barrier near floor level. DampBlock™ is injected
to stop rising damp through small 12mm holes. After the treatment, walls will dry out, and
moisture levels will return to normal.

Salt treatment for plastered walls

After a successful damp proofing solution, salt attack can occur as walls dry out. Most interior plaster walls with rising damp will require a salt neutraliser solution. Plaster is removed from walls at ground level and treated for salt before being replastered.

Salt treatment for mortar joints

Over time, the mortar between bricks can decay from crystalising salt. The mortar becomes
soft and unable to support the structure. Repair mortar between bricks is just as crucial as damp proofing and will return structural integrity.
